16°C or below = all 10 balls are gathered at the top

18°C = 9 balls at the top, 1 ball at the bottom

20°C = 8 balls at the top, 2 balls at the bottom

22°C = 7 balls at the top, 3 balls at the bottom

24°C = 6 balls at the top, 4 balls at the bottom

etc.

Above 34°C = all balls are together at the bottom.

 

The weight of each individual glass ball varies minimally and the balls rise or fall due to the respective temperature changes in the room.

If the temperature increases, the balls sink; if the temperature drops, the balls rise.

The lower ball of the balls that floats highest in the thermometer shows the current temperature.
