Starboard is a nautical term referring to the right side of a ship or aircraft. The opposite side is port.

The starboard side is marked with green lights.

The term starboard originally dates back to the Viking Age, when the rudder was located on the starboard side. When steering the ship, the helmsman had his back to the left side (port) and the rudder (steering wheel) on his right side. That is why it is called the steering side.

The same technique was used in ancient times, so we do not know who originally invented the term.
