Machine telegraph on wooden base - height 33 cm - ø 13 cm
The machine telegraph was usually connected to the engine room with chains. However, the telegraph had no direct connection with the engines. It was only used to inform an engineer, who acknowledged on his copy of the engine telegraph, that the message had been received on the bridge. Usually a bell was also associated with the engine telegraph. This made it more certain that the message had been received. The disadvantage of chains was that they gave way a lot and often had to be adjusted, which is why they sometimes switched to rod control.
Unfortunately, the system was not completely safe as the operator could miss the signal for one reason or another. In addition, it was not a very fast system, which could have fatal consequences.
