Engine telegraph

An engine telegraph belongs to a bygone era and can only be found on old ships. She was typically found on the bridge from around 1800-1950.

The telegraph on the bridge was mechanically linked to a similar telegraph in the ship's engine room. When the captain wanted to change the speed from full to half, he turned the lever on the telegraph from full to half and the pointer in the engine room changed from full to half. The engineer acknowledged the order by moving his lever from full to half, whereupon the pointer on the bridge telegraph moved to the desired speed, allowing the master to see that the order had been received.

The telegraph also had a bell that rang when there was a change to draw attention to it. The telegraph was not connected to the ship's engine and therefore only functioned as its name suggests - namely as a telegraph.
