Hourglass

The origin of the hourglass is not known exactly, but they were used in shipping for a long time because pendulum clocks on ships were inaccurate. The clocks could not measure the time at sea and when the ship had a list for long periods. The sand clock was unaffected by moisture and a slight slope.

Since the hourglass is the reliable way to measure time at sea, it is believed that it has been used since the 11th century, when it should have been a supplement to the magnetic compass and a navigation aid. Despite this, there is no evidence that the hourglass was used until the 14th century, when it is seen in a painting by Ambrogio Lorenzetti (1328). During Ferdinand Magellan's voyages, he had vessels 18 hourglasses per. ship. It was the ships' pagers who had the task of turning the glasses over and thus announcing the time for the log bookkeeping. The time was announced with a fixed number of beats on the ship's bell. Hence the term "beating glass". At sea, therefore, one beats glass (hourglass) - i.e. one beats half and whole glass for every half hour. One stroke for half an hour and a double stroke for a full hour.

And the time glass can also be used if you just want to boil an egg. Just remember to choose an hourglass of 3 minutes if you want the egg to be soft-boiled.
