Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean

No, the Black Pearl never existed in real life - it's a fictional ship created for the films. It was first introduced in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), and since then it has become one of the most iconic pirate ships in pop culture.

Some nerd facts:

  • According to the film's story, the ship was originally called the Wicked Wench but was sunk by the East India Trading Company.
  • It was raised from the bottom of the sea by Davy Jones when Jack Sparrow made a pact - and the ship then became The Black Pearl, with black sails and a demonic reputation.
  • The ship is said to be the fastest on the sea and can sail faster than any other, even against the wind.

But how did they make it for the film?

In reality, the film crew built a fully functional ship on top of a large floating barge to film at sea. It was later customised with special effects and CGI to give it the dark, almost creepy look we know.
